Google Chrome won't open on Windows? 7 fixes that work
✓ Reviewed & updated June 2026You click the Chrome icon and nothing happens — no window, no error, just a busy cursor for a second and then silence. Or Chrome seems to start (you see it in Task Manager) but never shows a window. It's a common Windows problem and rarely serious. It usually comes down to a stuck process, a corrupted profile, or something blocking Chrome — and your bookmarks and passwords are safe, especially if you're signed in to sync.
Work through these in order. Most people are browsing again by step 3.
Quick checklist
- End all Chrome processes and reopen
- Restart your PC
- Run Chrome as administrator
- Rename your Chrome profile folder
- Check antivirus and firewall
- Scan for malware and conflicting software
- Reinstall Chrome (your data syncs back)
Why Chrome won't open
The most common causes are a Chrome process stuck in memory, a corrupted user profile (the number-one culprit when Chrome "runs" but shows no window), antivirus blocking it, or malware/conflicting software. The fixes below tackle each in turn.
The 7 fixes
End all Chrome processes
If Chrome is already running invisibly, a new window can't open. Clear it out first.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - End every Google Chrome / chrome.exe entry in the list.
- Try opening Chrome again.
Restart your PC
A simple restart clears stuck processes and temporary conflicts that can keep Chrome from launching.
- Save your work and choose Restart (not Shut down).
- After it reboots, try Chrome before anything else.
Run Chrome as administrator
Permission issues can stop Chrome from opening, especially after a Windows update.
- Right-click the Chrome icon → Run as administrator → Yes.
- If it opens, set it permanently via Properties → Compatibility → Run this program as an administrator.
Rename your Chrome profile folder
A corrupted profile is the most common reason Chrome runs but never shows a window. Renaming it forces Chrome to build a fresh one. If you're signed in to Chrome, your bookmarks and passwords sync back afterwards.
- Close Chrome fully (fix 1).
- Press
Windows + R, type%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Dataand press Enter. - Find the folder named Default and rename it to
Default_old. - Open Chrome — it creates a new profile. Sign in to restore your synced data.
Check antivirus and firewall
Security software occasionally blocks Chrome by mistake.
- Check your antivirus quarantine list and restore Chrome if it's there.
- Make sure Chrome is allowed through Windows Firewall (search Allow an app through Windows Firewall).
- As a test, briefly disable third-party antivirus and launch Chrome, then re-enable it.
Scan for malware and conflicting software
Malware and certain background apps are known to block Chrome from starting.
- Run a full scan with Windows Security (Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection).
- Remove anything it finds, restart, and try Chrome again.
Reinstall Chrome
If nothing works, a clean reinstall replaces whatever's broken. Signed-in users keep their data through sync.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Google Chrome → Uninstall.
- Download a fresh copy from
google.com/chromeusing another browser (Edge is already on Windows). - Install, sign in, and your bookmarks and passwords sync back.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my bookmarks and passwords?
If you're signed in to Chrome with sync on, no — everything restores when you sign back in. If you're not signed in, rename the profile rather than delete it (fix 4) so you can recover data from the Default_old folder if needed.
Chrome shows in Task Manager but no window appears. Which fix?
That's the classic corrupted-profile symptom. Go straight to renaming the profile folder (fix 4) — it resolves this in most cases.
Could malware be stopping Chrome from opening?
Yes. Some malware specifically targets browsers. Running a full Windows Security scan (fix 6) and removing threats often restores Chrome.
How do I download Chrome if it won't open?
Use Microsoft Edge, which comes built into Windows, to visit google.com/chrome and download the installer.
