The good news: it's almost always a small issue with the app's cache or a sync glitch with your phone, and both clear quickly. Here's how to get it back.

Why WhatsApp Desktop won't open

Fully close WhatsApp and reopen

WhatsApp keeps running in the system tray, and a frozen copy will block a fresh start.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • End every WhatsApp entry.
  • Reopen WhatsApp.

Check your internet and your phone

WhatsApp Desktop links to your phone, so a connection issue on either side can stop it loading.

  • Confirm your PC's internet works in a browser.
  • Make sure WhatsApp on your phone is online — the desktop app needs your account active, though recent versions work even when your phone is offline once linked.

Update WhatsApp from the Microsoft Store

An out-of-date app is a frequent cause, and updates fix it.

  • Open the Microsoft Store → Library (or Downloads).
  • Click Get updates and let WhatsApp update if an update is listed.
  • Reopen WhatsApp.

Repair or reset WhatsApp

Windows can repair WhatsApp without losing data, and reset it if repair isn't enough.

  • Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  • Find WhatsApp → three dots → Advanced options.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache

A corrupted Store cache can stop Store apps like WhatsApp from launching. Resetting it is safe.

  • Press Windows + R, type wsreset.exe and press Enter.
  • A blank Command Prompt window opens, runs, and closes — then the Store opens. That's normal.
  • Try WhatsApp again.

Allow WhatsApp through your firewall

Security software occasionally blocks WhatsApp from connecting.

  • Search Allow an app through Windows Firewall and make sure WhatsApp is ticked for Private and Public.
  • Check your antivirus quarantine and restore/allow WhatsApp if it's listed.

Reinstall and re-link WhatsApp

A clean reinstall replaces a broken app. Your chats are backed up and re-sync when you link again.

  • Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Uninstall.
  • Reinstall it from the Microsoft Store or whatsapp.com/download.
  • Open it and link by scanning the QR code: on your phone, go to Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device.

Will I lose my chats if I reset or reinstall WhatsApp Desktop?

Your chats live on your phone and in your account, not the desktop app. Resetting or reinstalling just means re-linking with the QR code, and your recent chats sync back over.

WhatsApp Desktop opens to a white or blank screen. Which fix?

A blank screen is usually a corrupted cache. Repair or reset the app (fix 4), and if needed reset the Microsoft Store cache (fix 5).

Does my phone need to be online for WhatsApp Desktop to work?
