Discord stuck on "Update Failed"? How to break the loop

✓ Reviewed & updated June 2026

Discord opens, shows its logo, and then sits on "Update Failed — Retrying in a few seconds" forever. It tries, fails, counts down, tries again — an endless loop that never lets you in. It's frustrating, but the cause is almost always simple: the updater can't write its files or can't reach Discord's servers. Here's how to break out of it.

Work through these in order. Most people are back in by step 3.

Quick checklist

  1. Run Discord as administrator
  2. Run Update.exe directly from the Discord folder
  3. Rename Discord's local folder to force a clean update
  4. Allow Discord through antivirus and firewall
  5. Switch your DNS and flush it
  6. Reinstall Discord from the official site

Need Discord right now? Open discord.com/app in your browser and log in. The browser version never shows the update loop, so you won't miss anything while you fix the desktop app.

Why Discord gets stuck updating

The update loop has two usual causes. Either the updater doesn't have permission to replace its own files (Windows or your antivirus is blocking it), or it can't connect to Discord's update servers because of a network or DNS hiccup. The fixes below cover both.

The 6 fixes

1

Run Discord as administrator

The simplest cause is that the updater can't write to its folder without higher permissions.

  • Close Discord fully: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end every Discord task.
  • Right-click the Discord icon → Run as administratorYes.
  • Let it try the update again.
2

Run Update.exe directly

Skipping the shortcut and launching the updater itself often pushes a stuck update through.

  • Press Windows + R, type %localappdata%\Discord and press Enter.
  • Find Update.exe in that folder.
  • Right-click it → Run as administrator.
3

Rename the Discord folder to force a clean update

If the update files are corrupted, Discord keeps failing on the same broken data. Renaming the folder makes it fetch a fresh copy.

  • Close Discord fully (step 1).
  • Press Windows + R, type %localappdata%, press Enter.
  • Right-click the Discord folder → Rename → call it Discord_old.
  • Open Discord again — it will rebuild and update cleanly. Once it works, you can delete Discord_old.

4

Allow Discord through antivirus and firewall

Security software sometimes blocks the updater mid-download, which traps you in the loop.

  • Open your antivirus → check the blocked/quarantine list → restore Discord and add it as an exclusion.
  • In Windows, search Allow an app through Windows Firewall, find Discord, and tick both Private and Public.
  • Test by briefly disabling third-party antivirus, then re-enable it after the update completes.
5

Switch your DNS and flush it

If your network can't resolve Discord's update servers, the updater silently fails. Switching to a reliable public DNS fixes this surprisingly often.

  • Open Settings → Network & Internet → your connection → Edit DNS.
  • Set it to Manual and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS). Save.
  • Then flush the old cache: open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns.
  • Restart Discord.
6

Reinstall Discord from the official site

If the loop won't break, a clean reinstall clears it for good. Nothing is lost — your account lives on Discord's servers.

  • Press Windows + IAppsDiscordUninstall.
  • Delete leftovers: remove the Discord folders in %appdata% and %localappdata%.
  • Download a fresh copy from discord.com/download only.
  • Install and log in.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Discord keep saying "Update Failed"?

Two reasons cover almost every case: the updater can't write its files (a permissions or antivirus block) or it can't reach Discord's servers (a network or DNS problem). The fixes above address both.

Is it safe to rename or delete the Discord folder?

Yes. Those folders hold the app and its cache, not your messages. Discord rebuilds them on the next launch, and your account data is untouched.

The loop only started after a Windows or antivirus update. Why?

New security rules sometimes start blocking Discord's updater. Adding Discord as an antivirus exclusion and allowing it through the firewall (fix 4) usually clears it.

Can I just keep using Discord in the browser?

Yes, indefinitely. discord.com/app gives you the same account and servers with no update loop — handy as a permanent backup or while you troubleshoot.
