Minecraft Launcher not opening on Windows? 7 fixes
✓ Reviewed & updated June 2026You click the Minecraft Launcher and it either does nothing, flashes open and disappears, or sits there frozen before you ever reach the Play button. It's a frustrating place to get stuck — but it's a common Windows issue, and your worlds are safe throughout. The launcher and the game are separate from your saved worlds, so fixing the launcher won't touch your builds.
Work through these in order; most people are launching again by step 4.
Protect your worlds first. None of these steps require deleting your .minecraft folder — that's where your worlds live. Never delete it to fix the launcher.
Quick checklist
- End every Minecraft process and reopen
- Run the launcher as administrator
- Update your graphics driver
- Repair, then reset the launcher (Microsoft Store)
- Allow Minecraft through your antivirus
- Reinstall the launcher (worlds stay safe)
- Update or reinstall Java (Java Edition)
Why the Minecraft Launcher won't open
The usual causes are a stuck launcher process, an outdated graphics driver, a corrupted launcher install, or antivirus interference. For Java Edition, a broken Java installation can also be the culprit. Each fix below targets one of these.
The 7 fixes
End every Minecraft process
A launcher stuck in the background blocks a new one from opening.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - End every entry containing Minecraft (launcher and game).
- Open the launcher again.
Run the launcher as administrator
Without the right permissions, the launcher can fail to start silently.
- Right-click the Minecraft Launcher icon → Run as administrator → Yes.
- If it opens, make it permanent via Properties → Compatibility → Run this program as an administrator.
Update your graphics driver
An outdated GPU driver is a frequent cause of the launcher opening and closing instantly.
- Update your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel's app, or via Settings → Windows Update.
- Restart your PC and try the launcher again.
Repair, then reset the launcher
If you got Minecraft from the Microsoft Store, Windows can repair the launcher without removing anything — and a reset clears corrupted launcher data while leaving your worlds untouched.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Minecraft Launcher → three dots → Advanced options.
- Click Repair first and test the launcher.
- If it still won't open, return here and click Reset. Your saved worlds in
.minecraftare not affected.
Allow Minecraft through your antivirus
Security software can block the launcher's files, especially after an update.
- Check your antivirus quarantine and restore Minecraft if it's listed.
- Add the Minecraft Launcher to your antivirus exclusions.
- Test by briefly disabling third-party antivirus, then turn it back on.
Reinstall the launcher
A clean reinstall replaces a broken launcher. Your worlds live in a separate folder, so they stay safe.
- Go to Settings → Apps → Minecraft Launcher → Uninstall.
- Reinstall from the Microsoft Store or from
minecraft.net/download. - Log in — your worlds and purchases return automatically.
Update or reinstall Java (Java Edition)
If you play Java Edition, a broken Java install can stop the launcher from working.
- The modern launcher manages its own Java, so a full reinstall (fix 6) usually refreshes it.
- If you use a custom Java setup, update it from
java.comor your chosen distribution, then restart.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my worlds if I reset or reinstall the launcher?
No. Your worlds are stored in the .minecraft folder, which is separate from the launcher. Resetting or reinstalling the launcher leaves that folder — and your builds — untouched.
The launcher opens then closes instantly. What's first?
That usually means an outdated graphics driver (fix 3) or a corrupted launcher (fix 4). Update the driver, then repair or reset the launcher.
Should I delete the .minecraft folder?
No — that folder holds your worlds and settings. None of the fixes here need it deleted. If you ever back it up, copy it somewhere safe rather than deleting it.
I have both Java and Bedrock. Does this guide cover both?
Yes. The unified launcher runs both editions, and these fixes apply to the launcher itself. Java-specific issues are covered in fix 7.
