Roblox won't open or keeps crashing on PC? 8 fixes

✓ Reviewed & updated June 2026

You click Play, the game starts to load… and then nothing — Roblox either never opens, closes the instant it launches, or crashes you out mid-game. It's one of the most common Roblox problems on Windows, and it's almost always something small: a stuck process, an outdated driver, or a corrupted install. None of these fixes will affect your account or your games.

Go through them in order. Most people are back in by step 4.

Quick checklist

  1. Close every Roblox process and reopen
  2. Check Roblox's status and your internet
  3. Update Windows and your graphics driver
  4. Run Roblox as administrator
  5. Clear temporary files
  6. Allow Roblox through your firewall and antivirus
  7. Reset or repair the Roblox app
  8. Reinstall Roblox cleanly

Why Roblox won't open or keeps crashing

The usual causes are a Roblox process stuck in the background, an outdated graphics driver or Windows build, a corrupted install or cache, or antivirus blocking the launcher. The steps below clear each, starting with the fastest.

The 8 fixes

1

Close every Roblox process first

A half-loaded Roblox hiding in the background will stop a new one from opening.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • End every entry containing Roblox (the player and the launcher).
  • Try opening Roblox again.
2

Check Roblox's status and your internet

Sometimes the problem isn't your PC at all — Roblox itself may be having an outage.

  • Visit status.roblox.com to see if there's a known issue.
  • Test your connection in a browser. If you're on Wi-Fi, restarting your router often clears connection-related crashes.
3

Update Windows and your graphics driver

Roblox is sensitive to outdated graphics drivers — a frequent cause of instant crashes.

  • Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and install everything.
  • Update your graphics driver from your GPU maker's app (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel) or via Windows Update, then restart.
4

Run Roblox as administrator

Permission issues can quietly block Roblox from launching.

  • Right-click the Roblox icon → Run as administratorYes.
  • If that helps, right-click → PropertiesCompatibility → tick Run this program as an administrator to make it permanent.

5

Clear temporary files

A clogged temp folder can cause Roblox to crash on launch. Clearing it is completely safe.

  • Press Windows + R, type %temp% and press Enter.
  • Select everything (Ctrl + A) and delete it. Skip any files that are "in use" — that's normal.
  • Reopen Roblox.
6

Allow Roblox through firewall and antivirus

Security software sometimes flags Roblox by mistake and blocks it from running.

  • Check your antivirus quarantine list and restore Roblox if it's there.
  • In Windows, search Allow an app through Windows Firewall and make sure Roblox is ticked for both Private and Public.
  • As a test, briefly disable third-party antivirus and launch Roblox, then re-enable protection.
7

Reset or repair the Roblox app

If you installed Roblox from the Microsoft Store, Windows can repair it without a full reinstall.

  • Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  • Find Roblox, click the three dots → Advanced options.
  • Click Repair first. If that doesn't help, click Reset.
8

Reinstall Roblox cleanly

A fresh install clears out whatever's broken. Your account and games are safe — they're stored online, not on your PC.

  • Go to Settings → AppsRobloxUninstall.
  • Restart your PC.
  • Reinstall from the official source only: the Microsoft Store, or roblox.com by launching any game.
  • Log back in.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my account or games if I reinstall Roblox?

No. Your account, avatar and games all live on Roblox's servers. Reinstalling only replaces the app on your PC, and everything returns when you log in.

Roblox opens then closes immediately. Which fix first?

That pattern usually points to graphics drivers or a corrupted install. Update your driver (fix 3), then repair or reset the app (fix 7). Those two solve most instant-close cases.

Should I use the Microsoft Store version or the website version?

Both work. If the Store version keeps crashing, uninstall it and launch a game from roblox.com instead (which installs the standalone player), or the other way round. One often runs more reliably on a given PC.

Could my antivirus really be the cause?

Yes, it's common. Security tools sometimes block Roblox's launcher. Adding it as an exception (fix 6) prevents it.
